1) Meeting called to order
2) Introductions and Announcements
a) Kathy Ryg thanks the coalition for sending letters to the Illinois After School Alliance.
Lydia Taylor presented these letters to the Illinois Board of Education requesting to keep the line items for after school programs. Kathy reports that the presentation was well received and maintained the line item. It was also suggested to continue to write letters to the Governor highlighting the need for funding and the importance of the programs.
Kathy Ryg also reports that the One-to-One Task Force will soon be coming out with a
report (draft form) and will be sent via e-mail once available. Results find one-to-one
mentoring extremely effective and partnering the best way to get to the group.
Kathy also mentioned that the Autism Society has developed an agenda aggressively
seeking funding; also on February 15th Dr. Richard Kellar will be holding a meeting to
begin a local suicide prevention task force
b) Cheryl Carlson mentioned that Abbott hosted their annual Summer Camp Fair and she had invited Kathy Ryg to observe. Cheryl Carlson also reported that volunteers are needed for after-school tutoring program for Viking Middle School students from 3:30-4:30 p.m. Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, beginning February 7th; for more information, please contact Tami Kroc at 847.336.2108.
c) Del Parra announced his new position as Family Resource Center Director at Diamond Lake School District 76.
d) Adrienne Johnson announced West Deerfield Township is the first township to join the LCASC as paid members.
e) Patti LePalla Bardell reported April is Prevent Child Abuse Awareness Month and
announced there will be three kick-off events to take place in Springfield, Chicago
(April 3), and Mt. Vernon as well as May 7-13 as Children’s Mental Health Week.
f) Jennifer Anderson handed out fact sheets detailing Northern Illinois Food Bank’s
Summer Food Service and After-School Snack Programs. For information, visit the
NIFB website at www.northernillinoisfoodbank.org and click on Food Programs.
Connie Willegal and Liz Nelson will be drafting a letter of invitation and all board members are asked to submit potential candidates to either Theresa Loerch or Liz Nelson.
iv) Special Needs – has not met.
3) New Business
a) JoAnn Carpenter reports that the YWCA is reapplying for the 21st Century grant in collaboration with North Chicago District 187 and University of Illinois Extension.
b) Wallace Brandies reports that there are $1000 grant opportunities offered by the Department of Human Services, Division of Community Health and Prevention to hold town hall meetings as part of a national effort to increase the understanding of underage drinking and its consequences. The meetings will provide an opportunity for the communities to learn more about the latest research on the issue, and to discuss how their community can best prevent underage alcohol use. The town hall meetings are designed to alert and empower communities to begin to tackle underage drinking and its consequences. It was mentioned that the town hall meetings must take place within a certain timeframe. Bruce Johnson said he would make some calls on behalf of the After School Coalition regarding this grant opportunity.
