B.     Report on April 11th Town Hall meeting ~ Prevention of Underage Drinking

The purpose of this meeting was to increase awareness of the threat of underage drinking, identify how underage drinking affects our community and to brainstorm possible solutions

Comments made regarding the April 11th Town Hall meeting is as follows….

Marketing efforts included e-mail blasts, newspaper coverage, billboard signage, and 10,000 flyers distributed to local schools and churches.

It was agreed that the newspapers did a great job of covering the April 11th Town Hall meeting on the prevention of underage drinking.  Media coverage included The Daily Herald, News Sun, Pioneer Press and Lakeland Media.  Articles can be found on the website under media.

There were approximately 140 people in attendance at the April 11th meeting.

The auditorium’s capacity is 800 people.  The committee found out after the dates were set that schools and townships had previous commitments.

Originally the format was to have concurrent English and Spanish sessions, but with less than expected turnout, the two groups were combined

It was discussed that more parents need to get involved.  Underage drinking is a huge problem and parents need to be become aware of the consequences before it’s too late.

There was discussion for the group to work on community needs - community solutions; keeping track of statistics of underage drinking in the community and its consequences.  A program is needed that is consistent in all communities.

There will be a follow up Town Hall meeting scheduled for April 25th to hear the results of the April 11th meeting and to help prioritize needs and develop an action plan.  Recommendations will be sent to the Governor’s Alcohol Abuse Task Force.

Special thanks to Northern Illinois Food Banks for sponsoring the refreshments at both town hall meetings.
