From this announcement there was discussion that there has always been gang activity in Lake County; however, it has increased significantly throughout the past year.  It was mentioned that the gangs are coming back strong and coming back smart.  The Coalition decided that at the next After School Coalition meeting, Chief Ray Rose and the Mundelein Police Gang Specialists will give a presentation.

This year the Faith Health Connection (a partnership of the Health Department and the faith community) has helped Love INC as they establish the first Annual Jill Dayton Back to School Program.  This event is in honor of one of their very dedicated volunteers who died in a car accident last fall.  Love INC has decided to support Kid's 1st Health Fair during the first year of their Annual Jill Dayton tribute.  They are sponsoring a Give-a-Ride program for any families from Waukegan, North Chicago, Zion, and Round Lake who need transportation to Kids 1st.  The families can call 847-406-4400 to request transportation.  For more information, call

Elizabeth Nelson and Katherine Caskey, Director of Enrollment spoke today about St. Martin de Porres High School, a   co-educational college preparatory school located in Waukegan. The school strives to develop the full potential of each student in an atmosphere of mutual respect for the religious and cultural heritage of every individual.

Since we have a limited budget and are always thankful for opportunities to spread the word about our school to students, middle school faculty and staff, agencies, faith-based organizations, please contact Liz Nelson at 847/543-2854 to schedule a presentation.

St. Martin de Porres High School opened in 2004 with 85 freshman and sophomore students.  Currently there are 150 students registered for the school’s second year.  Students seeking admission to St. Martin de Porres High School must be:  14 years old by August 1st; capable of college preparatory work; committed to working five days per month; from families where other college prep schools are not affordable options; sensitive to one’s culture and the culture of others; and willing to participate in a faith-based curriculum.  Tuition assistance is available.

After the presentation, there was discussion on cultural diversity issues (70% Latino, 25% African American, 5% mixed), teacher qualifications (college prep background) and work

opportunities (entry level clerical, local businesses, government offices).  It is the families’

responsibility to transport the child to school, it is the school’s responsibility to transport them to work.  For more information, please contact the Office of Enrollment at 847/623-5500.
