Strategic Planning Committee:  Judy Fried, chair of the Strategic Planning Committee presented an outline of the After School Coalition Strategic Plan.  The committee met to begin the process of creating a strategic plan for the Lake County After School Coalition.    The committee agreed upon and adopted the name, “Lake County After School Coalition”, for the organized group of community leaders who are forging this after school program initiative.  The components of this strategic plan include vision, mission, goals, objectives/activities/tasks and evaluation.  Outline of the Strategic Plan is attached.

Discussion in today’s meeting included adding these suggestions to the plan: defining ‘after school’ to include any out of school time in the Mission Statement and including the word “funding” to one of the goals.  The next Strategic Planning group meeting will be held on August 10th at 8:30 a.m. at the Regional Office of Education in Grayslake.  All interested coalition members are invited.

Assessment Committee:  Patti Leppala, chair for the After School Coalition Assessment Committee will be conducting a survey that will be assessing what resources are already available in Lake County now and also what are needed.  Their next meeting will be Tuesday, July 27th at 10 a.m. at SEDOL in Gages Lake.  All interested coalition members are invited.

Special Needs subcommittee – Patti Leppala, co-chair of the Special Needs subcommittee reports that they are working on finding out what the training needs are in Lake County pertaining to the special needs population.  There are a lot of groups out there (ie, churches, school) that are providing after school programs for special need children that do not have the proper training.  Their goal is to offer training workshops for these groups.  The IL After School Partnership/Alliance may be a resource.  Their next meeting will be held on Tuesday, July 27th at noon at SEDOL in Gages Lake.

Website:   Chief Ray Rose reports that they have purchased the domain name of www.lakecountyafterschool.org and web hosting service for a year.  Scott Schaefer from the Mundelein Police Department discussed website content and design options.  It was decided by the group that “Lake County After School Coalition” would be the official website name to be accessed at www.lakecountyafterschoolcoalition.org    Should a second domain name be added, there would be additional cost.  Website page possibilities could include:  Vision, Mission Statement, Goals, History, Upcoming Meetings, Minutes, Awards, Memberships, Pictures, Reports, and Message Board, etc.  Website could also provide links to Park Districts, School Districts, Lake County Resources, etc.  Such information should be forwarded to Scott Schaefer at srschaefer@mundelein.org .  It was also decided that there should be one general e-mail address to those inquiring at the website.  Kathy Ryg offered her district office to handle the incoming e-mails initially.

Grants:    Judy Fried, NICASA reports that they received a 21st Century Learning Grant for

“How to Reduce Youth Violence” (5 year federal grant).  David Hare, Round Lake Beach Police reports that they received a grant for after school purposes through the Departments of Justice and Health and Human Services (federal grant).  Chief Rose suggests putting together a template for writing grants.

Website Resource:  Website for setting up after school programs in your community is:

The Next Lake County After School Summit:  A special committee will be set up to plan the next big Lake County After School Summit.  Ray Rose, Kathy Ryg, Janna Born Larsen, Bruce Johnson, and Mary Penich volunteered for this committee.
