Funding/Sponsors – CDBG Meeting: Rep Kathy Ryg reported that she attended the last CDBG meeting – a process that Patti Leppala initiated. Kathy mentioned that because of Patti’s efforts, we are on their radar screen, medium priority list. It would be great to remind them of our interest.
Dr. Janet Ring suggests if you are looking for funding for character initiatives – Title IV for NCLB is an appropriate funding source. Also, for schools that are school-wide (over 40% poverty), the Title I funds can be used for character initiatives. Finally, Title I funds can be used for parent initiatives – both for targeted assistance and school-wide schools for parent training in
character initiatives. Title funds are United States Department of Education federal funds for schools.
There was further discussion of trying to go after grants for schools, after school, private corporations, after school programs. Cheryl Carlson offered to write letters to corporations to get the right attention.
Strategic Planning Committee: Judy Fried, chair of the Strategic Planning Committee presented a summary for the Lake County After School Coalition. Their committee worked on the wording of the vision/mission statement, as well as several of the goals. An outline of the Strategic Plan is attached. Judy would appreciate any feedback of this summary.
Discussion in today’s meeting included the wording of “funding” and its importance. There was discussion on if there are any other funding possibilities. Rep Kathy Ryg suggested to use a template but to include other wording for funding source. Also, Judy suggested that we ask an attorney or judge to work on the by-laws. Chief Rose will make the call to initiate the process. The next Strategic Planning group meeting will be held on Wednesday, September 8th at
8:30 a.m. at the Regional Office of Education in Grayslake. Goals 4 and 5 will be discussed at the next meeting. All interested coalition members are invited.
Assessment Committee: Patti Leppala, chair for the After School Coalition Assessment Committee brought a draft of the survey to identify all after school/out-of-school programming in Lake County, and to compile a resource guide. Some minor changes were made in the survey during today’s meeting. The target mailing date is the end of September. There was discussion on whether to send the survey via e-mail or mail. It was decided to send the survey via mail with the option of responding by mail or website. This survey will be offered on the After School Coalition website. A copy of the Assessment Committee Report is attached. Their next meeting will be held on Thursday, September 16 at 1:00 p.m. at SEDOL in Gages Lake. All interested coalition members are invited. Contact Patti at 847/831-5100 with any questions or to confirm the meeting before they come.
Special Needs Subcommittee – Patti Leppala, co-chair of the Special Needs subcommittee reports that their first goal would be to identify the training needs in Lake County for all those who provide after school (and out-of-school) programming for youth with special needs. The subcommittee also decided to hold a conference which will include workshops on the top training needs identified by schools, faith-based groups, park districts, special-rec associations, etc. A survey was put together to gather this information. The survey will be mailed and also be made available on the After School Coalition website. Target date for mailing of the survey is end of September, 2004. Target date for the conference is January, 2005. A copy of the Special Needs Subcommittee Report is attached.
Events Planning Subcommittee: Rep. Kathy Ryg reports that the next After School Coalition event will be held on October 19 (alternative date would be October 21) as a continental breakfast. Tentative agenda would be an initial presentation by United Way, an update on everything that the coalition has accomplished, reports of strategic planning, assessment, special needs, website, teens from teen centers speaking out on what they do, upcoming events, etc. Chief Bruce Johnson will call Crowne Plaza in Mundelein to check availability.
Marketing: Efforts will be made to reach out to the editorial board of local newspapers regarding October events, website, January conference and spring conference.
Website: Chief Ray Rose reports that they are working on the domain name change from After School Summit to After School Coalition. The website address is www.lakecountyafterschoolcoalition.org . Community Service Officer Scott Schaefer was contacted and he indicated that the website is accessible, but incomplete. The website is ready for content. CSO Schaefer can be reached at srschaefer@mundelein.org with any information on upcoming meetings, minutes, awards, memberships, pictures, reports, surveys, etc.
News: Adam Krieger, Warren Township Center reported that the opening of the Park City Teen
Center is a great example of government working together. Rep Kathy Ryg mentioned an article in the newspaper congratulating their efforts; as well as a suggestion to the kids hanging out in teen centers to write to the Governor’s office. This effort would help keep funding.
Dr. Janet Ring reported that Waukegan Public Schools in partnership with North Chicago and
Zion schools will host the Jesse White Tumbling Team with plans to establish affiliate team
in each of those school districts. This is all part of the after school program efforts.
Judy Fried, NICASA reports that the NICASA Teen Reach in Waukegan program wrote/directed an anti-gang video. This accomplishment was reported in the Chicago Tribune on Wednesday, July 28.
