The next After School Coalition Leadership meeting will be held on Friday, October 15th at 8:30 a.m. at the Mundelein Police Department.
Strategic Planning Committee: Anne Buck, Strategic Planning committee presented the After-School Coalition Strategic Plan outline and reviewed goals 3 through 6. There was discussion on goal #3 that ‘community-wide commitment’ was great wording, but that the ‘education’ was limiting. The committee decided that it should state ‘youth development’ in wording of the goal and that ‘education’ should be spelled out in the objective. In goal #5 wording was added to speak to academic, social, emotional growth and recreational programming.
It was also discussed that the mission statement should be modified ‘to advocate and support the development and continuation of effective after-school programs that empower Lake County’s youth to learn and thrive – based on each community’s needs is increasing relevant in all areas of the county’. A copy of the revised Strategic Plan is attached.
Assessment Committee: Patti Leppala, chair for the After School Coalition Assessment Committee reported that she and Carol Bercos met to go over the survey and they had questions on how this survey would be put to use on the website. Would one be able to input the data on-line or is the website just a vehicle to print off a copy? Chief Ray Rose and CSO Scott Schaefer, Mundelein Police Department will be checking into how this would work.
Patti also mentioned that they were in the process of collecting mailing lists to send this survey.
Melissa Ray Schaefer is investigating on how to compile a list of faith based organizations; the
current list we have only lists non-public schools. It was discussed that this would be a huge opportunity to devote attention to this group. Chief Rose mentioned that once the list has been compiled to please forward it to Cyndy Peart who will be handling the master contact list. The cost of this survey was discussed; SEDOL has offered to donate paper and envelopes and Chief Ray Rose mentioned that some funding can come from the drug access program. Chief Ray Rose and State Rep Kathy Ryg will write a letter to accompany this survey. The target date to send out this survey is November 15th. Their next meeting will be held on Monday, November 15th.
Special Needs subcommittee – Patti Leppala, co-chair of the Special Needs subcommittee reports that the survey is ready to go out and that they have received a lot of encouragement from SEDOL. Projected date for the survey to go out is mid October. The committee is also working on a conference in January, 2005.
Website: Scott Schaefer, Mundelein Police Department set up his lap top to demonstrate the After School Coalition website, www.lakecountyafterschoolcoalition.org The Website currently features a Welcome Page, Goals, History, Meeting Minutes, Power Point Presentations, Reports, Member Information, and Links. Scott asked the committee to send him links to be added to the website. Possibilities include police departments, park districts, social service providers, business organizations, etc. Scott’s e-mail address is srschaefer@mundelein.org. Michelle Michaels offered to help Scott categorize the links. Another suggestion made was if the committee can ask their organizations to add the After School Coalition website to their website. This would give more exposure to the website. Anne Buck asked about tracking of ‘hits’. Scott said that when the domain name was changed to Lake County After School Coalition, the ‘hit count’ reverted back to zero. It was suggested that this information be added to the minutes. The e-mail link from the site is currently linked to State Rep Kathy Ryg’s office. All incoming e-mails will be forwarded to the appropriate person/committee.
Events Planning subcommittee – State Rep Kathy Ryg and Chief Ray Rose report that the After School Coalition breakfast meeting will be held on October 21st at the Crowne Plaza in
Mundelein from 8:00 to 10:00 a.m. The invitation was reviewed and it was suggested that the website address be placed under the logo. Also, ‘Please feel free to make copies for anyone who shares our interest in after school program’ was included in the invite letter to encourage people to pass it on. The agenda will include: Introduction of Lights On! After School Program, presentation from United Way of Lake County Community Assessment, After School Coalition updates from Summit Report, Strategic Plan, Assessment Strategy and Website, Next Steps, and What’s New from Lake County Youth Perspective. This invitation will be added to the website’s upcoming event and is also attached with these minutes.
