Leadership Team Meeting Minutes

I.        Meeting called to order

 

II.     New Business

 

A.     Legislative Report

1.                  Kathy Ryg reported that Lydia Taylor is preparing a procedure manual on best practices for an after school coalition model. Kathy mentioned she talked with Rep. Ruth Munson and found out that they had received positive feedback from their first Northern Fox Valley After School Network event.  Also Rep. Ruth Munson was invited to speak at the Annual meting about their efforts.

 

2.                  Veto session is coming up in November and regular session in January, which is the beginning of the budget request.  The Youth Summit will be coming at a good time because it reinforces the need for more after school programs.

     

3.                  Mary Penich and Bruce Johnson reported that at the Waukegan Township breakfast in September there was mention of legislative efforts to have incentives for businesses to hire first time offenders.   Mary also mentioned at the breakfast that Roycealee Wood made reference to the Lake County After School Coalition and what we were doing in the county.

 

 

III.   Old Business

 

A.     Committee Reports

 

1.                  Strategic Planning – Mary Penich reported that the LCASC Advisory Board Letter of Invitations were mailed out and as of this meeting, they had received eleven responses.  These letters were sent from the Regional Office of Education to influential leaders in Lake County who support after school programs.   It was decided that each advisory board member would be invited to the Annual Breakfast as our guest. 

                                               

2.                  Ad/Hoc – The committee met several times in order to prepare for the upcoming LCASC 2nd Annual Meeting.  Bruce Johnson put together the following outline for this meeting to review all aspects of this event with the group.

3.                  Youth Advisory – Victor Morales reported that the Youth Advisory Committee will have a meeting tonight to finalize their part of the agenda for the annual meeting.  After this event is over, the Youth Advisory will meet monthly to plan for the Youth Summit in 2007.

 

4.                  Underage Drinking Prevention –

 

       a. Liz Nelson reported that the committee met on September 19th to develop goals for the committee. The goals decided on are to reduce 30-day alcohol use by 8th and 10th graders by five percent by 2011 and to delay the average age of first regular use of alcohol from age 12 to age 15 by 2011.  The Illinois Youth Survey data for Lake County is being utilized as an evaluation data source.

 

       b. Liz reported that she had attended the National Underage Drinking Conference and brought back programs done in other parts of the country.   Dr. Richard Keller, Lake County Coroner, thought that establishing a toll-free underage drinking tip line similar to one in Virginia would be worth pursuing for Illinois.  Chief Rose suggested the committee look into utilizing Crime Stoppers in the interim.

 

        c. Liz also reported that the committee is recommending that the Coalition sponsor a youth and adult chaperone to attend the 2007 National Underage Drinking Conference.  Kathy Ryg suggested that the committee draft a proposal that could be submitted to local businesses that are supportive of the coalition’s work for assistance with underwriting the costs involved.

 

IV. Announcements

 

1.                  Lisa Sheppard announced that the Gurnee Hunt Club Community Center will hold its Grand Opening on Saturday, September 30th.  For more information, visit their website at www.gurneeparkdistrict.com
