Board of Director’s Meeting Minutes
Attendance:
Judy Armstrong, JoAnn Carpenter, Migdalia Diaz, Adrienne Johnson, Jim Gagne, JoAnn Jakubowski, Bruce Johnson, Theresa Loerch, Michelle Ricker, Victor Morales, Liz Nelson, Mary Penich, Ray Rose, Kathy Ryg, Sharon Sanders-Funnye, Lisa Sheppard, Connie Willegal
I. The meeting was called to order 10:45 a.m. (immediately following 2nd Annual Meeting)
II. Co-Presidents Kathy Ryg and Chief Ray Rose welcomed new Board Members and gave special thanks to everyone who helped make the 2nd Annual Meeting a huge success. Kathy mentioned that it was a great idea to have an Advisory Board and to invite them to the breakfast as our guests. Chief Ray Rose commented that the After School Coalition is a good place for legislators to plug in to our efforts.
III. Nomination and election of officers
A. Secretary – 1 vacancy - no nomination was made.
B. Vice President – 2 vacancies – JoAnn Carpenter and Connie Willegal were nominated. Bruce Johnson moved to approve the nomination; Mary Penich seconded the motion. Nomination accepted by JoAnn and Connie.
C. President – 1 vacancy – Bruce Johnson nominated Chief Ray Rose; Connie Willegal seconded. The nomination was accepted by Chief Ray Rose.
Bruce Johnson moved to accept the slates presented. The vote was unanimous and motion was carried.
III. Additional Items
A. Connie Willegal suggested that board positions should be included as part of their
individual biographies as it give credibility to the coalition. She also encourages each member of the board to participate with a committee.
B. Lisa Sheppard reminds the board to renew their membership for 2007. An email reminder will be sent out shortly.
C. Sharon Sanders-Funnye commented that after the Annual Meeting several organizations offered their facilities for upcoming meetings of the Youth Advisory committee. The committee will be meeting monthly at various locations throughout Lake
County. Their focus has primarily been to prepare for the Annual Meeting, but starting with the next meeting, they will be focusing on planning the Youth Summit to be held in the spring.
D. JoAnn Carpenter mentioned that Fran Calvert took the sponsor letter to the NIC organization. There was discussion on possible sponsorship including transporting youths to and from the meetings as well as providing dinner. Sharon will draft a follow- up letter with specific requests.
E. Liz Nelson reminded the board that the Underage Drinking Prevention committee meetings will be held on the 3rd Tuesday of each month at 9 a.m. at the Illinois Crossroad Council – Girl Scouts in Vernon Hills. Email reminders will be sent out monthly.
F. Kathy Ryg reported that she had a conference call with Lydia Taylor, Illinois After- School Alliance regarding efforts for supplemental funding for 36 Teen Reach programs to be extended beyond the end of the year. Three thousand kids are at risk of losing services and the Department of Human Services has extended funding until 12/31/06.
Kathy also mentioned she met with Lynne Strutzel, Assistant Principal of Carmel Catholic High School at the Annual Meeting; Lynn reported that they trained several of their high school seniors on how to speak to the entire sophomore class on alcohol and other drugs during advisory periods.
IV. Announcements
A. Liz Nelson reminded everyone that the Lake County Red Ribbon Rally will take place on Tuesday, October 24th at 9:30 a.m. at the College of Lake County in Grayslake.
