Announcements

Kathy Ryg announced that she has been receiving positive feedback from events she had attended in the past month; Boys & Girls Club Dare to Dream event, LAN’s truancy prevention symposium, CROYA, SERS Legislative breakfast, etc.   Kathy also mentioned there were plans for the One-To-One Mentoring Task Force to host a hearing at the Thompson Center sometime during the month of November.  Once a date is determined, an e-mail announcement will be sent to request testimony ~ written or verbal.   All are welcome to participate.

Liz Nelson announced Lake County InTouch is conducting an assessment of municipal ordinances related to underage drinking. The assessment will be distributed to all police chiefs in Lake County. One of the reasons that InTouch is conducting the assessment is to create a database of Lake County ordinances related to underage drinking, since there is none thus far.

In Spring 2006 InTouch will host a forum to discus the survey funding and plan strategies to address underage drinking in our communities.  This topic sparked a lot of discussion on how to address underage drinking. Recent incidences of minors being caught drunk or with alcohol were also discussed. Consistency between municipalities and teaming up to show young people that Lake County is serious about addressing this issue was also discussed. An Underage Drinking Prevention symposium or summit may be the coalition’s next event, possibly in the spring.

Liz also reminded everyone to join the 19th Judicial Circuit Court, Lake County Health Department and local schools in celebrating a drug free community at the Red Ribbon Rally at 12:00 noon on Wednesday, October 26th in the Lincoln Plaza of the Lake County Courthouse and Administrative Complex, 18 N. County Street.     www.co.lake.il.us

Alex Marx, Mundelein Park District, announced the Mundelein After School Coalition will be hosting a Halloween Dance on October 28th at Carl Sandburg Middle School ~ all Mundelein

middle school age students were invited to participate.

Katherine Caskey announced that St. Martin de Porres High School would be hosting two Open Houses this Fall; October 26th and November 15th at 6 p.m.   All are welcome to tour the school and meet the students, faculty and staff and to learn about their unique educational program.  www.smdpwaukegan.org

Yvette Ewing, 21st Century Stars Program-Waukegan Public Schools, encouraged everyone

to participate in the Lights On! After School program.

Sharon Sanders-Funnye announced that the Boys & Girls Club of Lake County will be having ACT Prep classes to help students prepare for college and to get information about college tours.  More information will follow.

The Donors Forum has satellite offices in Schaumburg at their public library and in DuPage

County at their community college.  They are looking to add a third satellite, which will be at the

College of Lake County!  The details are still being worked out, but as soon as Yvette finds out

more, she will share the information with the coalition.

More information can be found on their website at www.donorsforum.org

Committee Reports – Review of the 1st Annual Meeting

Table Discussion Notes – Liz Nelson reviewed the notes collected from the 1st Annual Meeting addressing “How can the Lake County After School Coalition assist you/your organization with developing/expanding after school initiatives in your community?”  Several mentioned key issues such as youth/teen centers and transportation.  These issues will be discussed in more detail at the next Leadership meeting.  The notes from the table discussions have been attached for your review.

Barb Daudelin announced that since the Annual Meeting she had only received a few additions and corrections to the assessment summary and will need to resend the Countywide Agency Survey to organizations that have not responded.   Once the additional information is added, the results will be made available on the Lake County After School Coalition website www.lakecountyafterschoolcoalition.org

Lisa Sheppard reported that she would be sending acknowledgements to the 18 organizations (39 members) that have recently sent in their membership applications to the coalition.   The membership application is currently being updated and will be sent out via e-mail to all on e-list.  This application has been attached and will be available on the website soon.

Kathy Ryg suggested that the Lake County After School Coalition website should be included on all correspondence and literature.
